Relation to Labor Force (for persons aged 10 years and above):
Work:
It refers to the efforts individuals exert in all activities for profit or wage irrespective of whether it was a monthly salary, weekly wage, per diem, per piece, part of the profit, commission...etc. Work also includes unpaid activities in a family farm or business if conducted on a regular basis. Likewise, regular voluntary or charitable activities are classified under work.
Employed:
It refers to the person engaged in a certain productive activity or work, irrespective of whether he \ she was an employer, self employed, wage employed, unpaid family member or other. The employed person is normally classified in one of two categories according to the number of weekly working hours, i.e. 1 - 14 working hours and 15 working hours and above.
Unemployed:
It refers to all persons who did not work at all during the reference period, who were not engaged in a certain work (although they are able to work) and were available for work and actively seeking work during the reference period. Those temporarily absent from work are considered unemployed although they are expected to resume work or ready to return to work upon demand. The unemployed persons are normally divided into two categories: Unemployed ever worked and unemployed never worked.
Activity status:
1. Employed for 1 - 14 hours
It refers to the person (aged 10 years and above) who works or worked for 1 - 14 hours in the week prior to the night of the reference date.
2. Employed for 15 hours and above
It refers to the person (aged 10 years and above) who works or worked for 15 hours in the week prior to the night of the reference period.
3. Unemployed Ever Worked
It refers to the person (aged 10 years and above) who use to work in the past but is currently unemployed irrespective of the reason.
4. Unemployed Never Worked
It refers to the person (aged 10 years and above) who has not worked in the past and throughout his \ her life.
5. Student (Full - time student)
It refers to the person (aged 10 years and above) who is currently continuing his \ her studies in order to obtain certain qualifications, and was not engaged in any work during the reference period. It is worthy to note that homework and hobbies are not classified as work.
6. Housewife
It refers to the unemployed woman who can work but does not seek work and is not enrolled in any formal education program. She is undertaking household work to serve her household. However, this does not include serving in other houses in return for a wage in cash or in kind, for such an activity is classified under work.
7. Unable to Work
It refers to persons unable to engage in any type of work due to chronic diseases or disabilities. This category includes all persons unable to work due to old age.
8. Not Working and Not Looking for Work
This category applies to persons who can work but are unwilling to work and do not seek work due to having other sources of income, e.g. real estate …etc.
9. Other
This category applies to cases not falling under any of the aforementioned categories. Examples on such cases include prisoners and persons who can work but are unwilling to work, do not seek work and do not have other sources of income, e.g. sons and daughters not enrolled in schools and for whom none of the previously mentioned cases apply.
