Results of the Visual Information Means and Computer Survey
In the efforts of PCBS to provide
official statistics on different aspects of the Palestinian society, PCBS conducted a
special survey of visual information means and computer. The fieldwork was carried out
during the reference period for the second quarter of 1999.
The survey sample consisted of 7,559 households in
West Bank and Gaza Strip of which 6,970 completed the questionnaires.
The above mentioned survey provides data on the
number of households that own computers and the social and economical characteristics of
these households in order to provide decision makers with the needed information on the
readiness of the Palestinian society to deal with the advances of information technology .
The survey provides the percentage of households that have internet connections and access
to the World Wide Web out of the total number of households that own computers and
telephone lines.
Furthermore, the statistical data that was collected
through the survey gave the ability to make estimations on the Palestinian Society’s
need of computers, the number of households that will have computers on the coming years,
the distribution according to the area and the type of locality and the need of
educational policies as well as customs and taxes polices for obtaining computers
On the other hand, the survey has provided
statistical data on Palestinian households that have satellite dishes according to the
traditional distribution by region and governorates. In addition, the survey has provided
basic data on the preferences Palestinians have over local, regional and satellite
channels.
This survey is considered as a good opportunity,
which reflects how the Palestinian public obtains its entertainment and information. It
could be a basis for implementing more specific surveys on household’s behavior
towards other issues.
