Press Release on Labour Force Survey
Results (April– June, 2001) Round
280,000 Unemployed persons during the 2nd quarter 2001
This report is based on the Labour Force quarterly Survey. Data was collected
for the 21st round from 7/04/2001 to 5/07/2001, representing the
second quarter of 2001.
The survey sample of this round is based on
the 1997 census, 7,559 households were selected to represent the Palestinian
society of which 7,451 households completed the interview.
Economically Active:
-
According to the ILO standards, the number of
participants in labour force decreased by 60 thousand persons between the 3rd
quarter 2000 and 2nd quarter 2001. Where it decreased from 735
thousand in the 3rd quarter to 670 thousand in the 1st quarter
2001, to reach 675 thousand in the 2nd quarter in the same year.

Number of persons who don't work and don't seek job due
to discouragement increased by 29.0% between the 3rd quarter 2000
and 2nd quarter 2001; (27 thousand persons). They were 93 thousand
in the 3rd quarter 2000, increased to 117 thousand in the 1st
quarter 2001, to reach 120 thousand in the 2nd quarter in the same
year.
Unemployed Persons:
- Number of persons who don't work
nevertheless seeking or not seeking job, increased from 170 thousand in the 3rd
quarter 2000 to 297 thousand in the 1st quarter 2001, while it
decreased in the 2nd quarter to reach 280 thousand in the same year.
This represents 35.3% of the total labour force, according to the relaxed
definition of unemployment.
- While
those who don't work, but seeking job, in the 2nd quarter 2001
reached 160 thousand which represent 23.7% of the total labour force according
to the ILO standards, compared with 26.9% in the 1st quarter 2001
and 10.0% in the 3rd quarter 2000 (before the beginning of the
Al-Aqsa Intifada).
Employed Persons:
-
There is a decrease of those working in services and
other branches (33.6% in the 2nd quarter 2001, compared with 35.1%
in the 1st quarter in the same year, and 28.6% in the 3rd
quarter 2000). The results showed a sharp increase in the percentage of those
working in services and other branches in Gaza Strip, (38.0% in the 3rd
quarter 2000 to 54.8% in the 1th quarter 2001 to reach 54.1% in the
2 nd quarter 2001), also it increased in the West Bank from 24.6% in
the 3rd quarter 2000 to 28.0% in the 1st quarter 2001,
while it decreased in the 2nd quarter in the same year to reach
26.6%.

Employment in construction decreased in Gaza Strip from
15.9% in the 3rd quarter 2000 to 2.4% in the 1st quarter
2001, and it increased to 3.9% in the 2 nd quarter in the same year.
Whereas it decreased in the West Bank from 24.2% in 3rd quarter 2000
to 18.6% in the 2nd quarter 2001, while the percentage was 17.6% in
the 1st quarter 2001.

The results showed a decrease in the percentage of wage
employees in the West Bank (66.2% in the 3rd quarter 2000 to 57.0%
in the 4th quarter of the same year). It increased to 62.6% in the 1st
quarter 2001, then decreased in the 2nd quarter in the same year to
reach 59.6%. While in Gaza Strip, it decreased from 71.0% in the 3rd
quarter 2000, to reach 68.3% in the 1st quarter 2001, and 68.2% in
the 2nd quarter in the same year.
Wages:
The average value of the nominal daily net wage of the
employees in Gaza Strip increased from 50.4 NIS in the 3rd quarter
of 2000 to 54.6 NIS in the 1 st quarter 2001, and it remains the
same in the 2nd quarter in the same year. The Average daily net wage
for those working in Israel and settlements decreased form 110.8 NIS in the 3rd
quarter 2000 to 104.9 NIS in the 1 nd quarter 2001, while it
increased to 108.3 NIS in the 2nd quarter in the same year.
Dependency Ratio and Poverty:
-
The economic dependency ratio increased in the
Palestinian Territory from 4.8 in the 3rd quarter 2000 to 6.4 in the
2nd quarter 2001 (the change rate is 33.3%). Whereas, it increased
in the West Bank from 4.3 to 5.4 (the change rate is 25.6%) and in Gaza Strip
increased from 5.9 to 9.3 (the change rate is 57.6%), compared with 6.6 in the
Palestinian Territory in the 1st quarter 2001, this indicates that
the ratio decreased a little (3.0%) between 1st quarter 2001 and 2nd
quarter in the same year. The ratio in the West Bank reached 5.9 compared with
9.1 in Gaza Strip in the 2nd quarter 2001.

The percentage of employees whom monthly wages below
poverty line equivalent for the year 2001 (1642 NIS, for household composed of
two adults and 4 children) increased from 43.5% in the 3rd quarter
2000 to 49.0% in the 2 nd quarter 2001 (the change rate is 12.6%).
Compared with the 1st quarter 2001, the results showed a decrease in
the percentage since it was 51.2%.
