Press Release on the Results of the Labour Force Survey

Main Results
The labour force participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 45.6%
The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was about 1,276,000 in the 1st quarter 2015 ; about 810,300 in the West Bank and about 465,700 in Gaza Strip.
The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 45.6% and 45.5% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females in Palestine still very big it reached 71.7% for males compared with 18.8% for females.
25.6% the unemployment rate among labour force participants
Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was 326,100 in the 1st quarter 2015; distributed as 193,600 in Gaza Strip and 132,500 in the West Bank.
The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip was 41.6% compared with 16.3% in the West Bank in the 1st quarter 2015. And the unemployment rate for males in Palestine was 22.8% compared with 36.2% for females in the 1st quarter 2015.
The highest unemployment rate in the 1st quarter 2015 was 41.5% among youth aged 20-24 years. For years of schooling, the highest unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling or more was 44.0%.
Increased the number of the employment in the local market between the 4th quarter 2014 and 1st quarter 2015
The number of employed in the local market increased from 827,700 in the 4th quarter 2014 to 835,300 in the 1st quarter 2015. The number of employed persons in the West Bank decreased by 4,700 employed, while the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip increased by 12,300 employed.
The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 33.7% in the West Bank and 56.6% in Gaza Strip.
The public sector employed 23.2% of those in employment: 38.9% in Gaza Strip and 16.8% in the West Bank.
The average daily wage for wage employees in the West Bank was 94.2 NIS compared with 61.3 NIS in Gaza Strip.
The average weekly hours worked by wage employees in the West Bank was 43.4 in the 4th quarter 2014 compared with 43.0 in the 1st quarter 2015. The average number of days worked per month decreased from 22.9 to 21.9 over the same period. The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip was 37.2 hours per week in the 4th quarter 2014 compared with 37.0 in the 1st quarter 2015, while the average number of days worked per month decreased from 24.0 working day in the 4th quarter 2014 to 22.6 working day in the 1st quarter 2015.
Number of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements about 110,300 in the 1st quarter 2015
The number of employed persons from the West Bank employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 110,300 in the 1st quarter 2015 compared with 105,200 in the 4th quarter 2014. Of these, 58,700 had a permit, 39,300 worked without a permit and 12,300 employed persons have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.
The number of employees in the Israeli settlements increased from 20,200 in 4th quarter 2014 to 20,900 in 1st quarter 2015.
64.9% of employed in Israel and the Israeli settlements worked in the construction sector.
The average daily wage for the wage employees in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 196.4 NIS in the 1st quarter 2015 compared with 194.2 NIS in the 4th quarter 2014.
The average number of hours worked per week reached 40.9 in the 1st quarter 2015 compared with 41.9 in the 4th quarter 2014. The average number of days worked per month reached 18.8 working day compared with 19.8 working day in the same period.
Employment Status in the 1st quarter 2015
68.3% of employed persons are wage employees: 64.7% in the West Bank compared with 77.2% in Gaza Strip.
18.6% of employed persons are self- employed; 20.6% in the West Bank and 13.7% in Gaza Strip.
7.4% of employed persons are unpaid family members; 8.1% in the West Bank and 5.6% in Gaza Strip.
5.7% of employed persons are employers: 6.6% in the West Bank and 3.5% in Gaza Strip.

Working benefits for wage employees in the private sector
27.4% of wage employees are hired by contract (11.2% of them with limited period and 16.2% with unlimited period), compared with 53.3% hired without any contract, and 19.3% of wage employees are hired by collective agreement\ oral.
19.8% of wage employees contribute to a pension fund, 21.2% have annual paid leave and 35.6% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.
28.0% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union: 16.5% in the West Bank and 56.7% in Gaza Strip.
36.6% of wage employees in the private sector received less than the minimum wage (1,450 NIS) in Palestine.
In the West Bank about 20.4% of wage employees in the private sector received less than minimum monthly wage, about 44,600 wage employees with average monthly wage 1,041 NIS.
In Gaza Strip the percentage of wage employees in the private sector who received less than the minimum monthly wage was 70.7% about 73,500 wage employees with average monthly wage 700 NIS.
3.8% of children aged 10-17 years are employed
3.8% of children aged 10-17 years in Palestine are employed: 4.8% in the West Bank and 2.5% in Gaza Strip.
