Press Release on the Results of the Labour Force Survey (April - June, 2016) Round
Main Results
The labour force participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 45.7%
The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was 1,333,800 in the 2nd quarter 2016: 845,700 in the West Bank and 488,100 in Gaza Strip.
The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 45.8% and 45.5% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females in Palestine still very big where it reached 71.1% for males compared with 19.6% for females.
26.9% the unemployment rate among labour force participants
Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was 358,700 in the 2nd quarter 2016; distributed as 203,600 in Gaza Strip and 155,100 in the West Bank.
The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip was 41.7% compared with 18.3% in the West Bank in the 2nd quarter 2016. And the unemployment rate for males in Palestine was 22.1% compared with 44.7% for females in the 2nd quarter 2016.
The highest unemployment rate in the 2nd quarter 2016 was 42.6% among youth aged 20-24 years. For years of schooling, the highest unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling and more was 50.9%.
Increased the number of the employment in the local market between the 1st quarter 2016 and 2nd quarter 2016
The number of employed in the local market increased from 856,900 in the 1st quarter 2016 to 859,400 in the 2nd quarter 2016. The number of employed persons in the West Bank increased by 7,000 employed, and the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip decreased by 4,500 employed person.
The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 31.9% in the West Bank and 55.5% in Gaza Strip.
The public sector employed 21.2% of those in employment: 37.3% in Gaza Strip and 14.6% in the West Bank.
The average daily wage for wage employees in the West Bank was 98.3 NIS compared with 61.6 NIS in Gaza Strip.
The average weekly hours worked by wage employees in the West Bank was 43.9 in the 1st quarter 2016 compared with 44.5 in the 2nd quarter 2016. The average number of days worked per month was 22.5 and 23.1 day over the same period. The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip was 37.8 and 38.1 hours per week in the 2nd quarter 2016 and 1st quarter 2016, and the average number of days worked per month was 22.3 and 23.0 working day in 1st quarter 2016 and 2nd quarter 2016.
Number of employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 114,200 in the 2nd quarter 2016
The number of employed persons employed in Israel and Israeli settlements was 114,200 in the 2nd quarter 2016 compared with 114,000 in the 1st quarter 2016. Of these, 60,400 had a permit, 40,600 worked without any permit and 13,200 employed persons have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.
The number of employees in the Israeli settlements decreased from 21,700 in the 1st quarter 2016 to 19,100 in the 2nd quarter 2016.
63.5% of employed in Israel and the Israeli settlements worked in the construction sector.
The average daily wage for the wage employees in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 221.9 NIS in the 2nd quarter 2016 compared with 212.5 NIS in the 1st quarter 2016.
The average number of hours worked per week in Israel and the Israeli settlements reached 40.7 in the 2nd quarter 2016 compared with 40.3 in the 1st quarter 2016. The average number of days worked per month reached 20.1 working day the 2nd quarter 2016 compared with 19.8 in the 1st quarter 2016.
Employment Status in the 2nd quarter 2016
68.8% of employed persons are wage employees: 64.8% in the West Bank compared with 78.5% in Gaza Strip.
19.2% of employed persons are self- employed; 21.4% in the West Bank and 14.0% in Gaza Strip.
5.8% of employed persons are unpaid family members; 6.4% in the West Bank and 4.2% in Gaza Strip.
6.2% of employed persons are employers: 7.4% in the West Bank and 3.3% in Gaza Strip.
Working benefits for wage employees in the private sector
26.4% of wage employees are hired by contract (9.8% of them with limited period and 16.6% with unlimited period), compared with 53.3% hired without any contract, and 20.3% of wage employees are hired by verbal agreement.
22.9% of wage employees contribute to a pension fund, 22.8% have annual paid leave and 37.7% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.
17.5% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union: 12.2% in the West Bank and 30.4% in Gaza Strip.
38.9% of wage employees in the private sector received less than the minimum wage (1,450 NIS) in Palestine.
In the West Bank about 19.6% of wage employees in the private sector received less than minimum monthly wage, about 42,500 wage employees with average monthly wage 1,104 NIS.
In Gaza Strip the percentage of wage employees in the private sector who received less than the minimum monthly wage was 78.0% about 83,900 wage employees with average monthly wage 734 NIS.
Child Labour
3.7% of children aged 10-17 years in Palestine are employed: 5.0% in the West Bank and 1.8% in Gaza Strip.
