The International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life. The theme for this year is "Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people of all abilities".
Prevalence of Disability in Palestine
In 2011 data showed that around 113 thousand individuals suffered from at least one disability which constitutes 2.7% of the total population of Palestine: 75 thousand in the West Bank 2.9%, and around 38 thousand in Gaza Strip 2.4%. By gender, 2.9% are males and 2.5% are females.

Prevalence of Disability Among Children (0-17) Years in Palestine
In 2011 data showed that 1.5% of children (0-17) years are disabled, 1.6% in the West Bank compared to 1.4% in Gaza Strip. By gender, 1.8% are males and 1.3% are females.

Learning Disability Is The Most Common Among Children
46.1% of the total disabled children in Palestine suffered from learning disability in 2011; 44.9% in the West Bank and 48.1% in Gaza Strip. Communication disability is the second most prevalent with 37.3% (35.7% in the West Bank and 40.1% in Gaza Strip).

Congenital Reasons are The Most Common Reasons of Disability Among Children (0-17) Years
Congenital reasons was the most common cause of all disabilities except for hearing disability among children; this percentage was 28.6% for children with a vision disability, 34.5% for children with mobility disability, 31.3% for children with remembering and concentrating disability, 36.6% for children with communication disability, 28.0% for children with learning disability and 23.4% for children with mental disability. Meanwhile illness was the most common cause of hearing disability among children followed by congenital reasons which was 27.2%, 24.6% respectively.
Children with Mobility Disability the Most Needed for Modified Features to Continue their Education
Data in 2011 showed that half of the children aged (10-17) years with mobility disability need accessible transportation to continue their education, 46.3% need adjusted school buildings, and half of them need adjusted classrooms, Meanwhile 52.8% need adjusted bathrooms. Children aged (10-17) years with vision disability, learning disability, and hearing disability are the most in need for adjusted classrooms to continue education; 38.5%, 5.8% and 24.2% respectively.
However 12.5% of children with communication disability need accessible transportation to continue their education, 6.3% need adjusted school buildings, 12.5% need adjusted classrooms and the same percentage for the needed adjusted bathrooms.
Quarter of the children with remembering and concentrating disability need accessible transportation to continue their education, and one fifth need adjusted classrooms and adjusted school buildings, however 10.5% of the children with remembering and concentrating disability need adjusted bathrooms.
