Press Release Main Findings of Time Use Survey, 2012/2013
Main Findings
Work activities 2012/2013 · Males spent approximately 4 hours and 9 minutes at work during the day, comprising 17.3 % of their daily time spent on work activities. Females spent nearly 36 minutes during the day on work activities, representing 2.5% of their time during the day.

· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of 7 hours and 13 minutes in the formal sector in Palestine: 7 hours and 48 minutes for males (11.1% who performed this activity) compared to 5 hours and 29 minutes for females (3.8% who performed this activity ).
· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of 3 hours and 26 minutes in activities of primary production (economic activities such as agriculture, hunting, forestry, fishing, mining and quarrying) in Palestine: 4 hours and 23 minutes for males (10.4% who performed this activity) compared to 2 hours and 19 minutes for females (6.3% who performed this activity).
· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of 5 hours and 17 minutes in primary production activities (manufacturing industries for the production of goods is primary production, whether for the market or end-use sector) in Palestine: 7 hours and 3 minutes for males (3.5% who performed this activity) compared to 2 hours and 13 minutes for females (2.0% who performed this activity).
· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of 8 hours and 18 minutes in construction activities (bricklaying, installing panels, plumbing, painting and everything related to construction) 4.4% in Palestine. 8 hours and 18 minutes for males (8.0% who performed this activity) compared to 15 minutes for females (0.3% who performed this activity).
· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of 7 hours and 24 minutes in services related to income generation (sales of food and wholesale, repairs, installation and maintenance, providing business and professional services, paid home services) 13.4% who performed this activity) in Palestine. 8 hours and 3 minutes for males (23.3% who performed this activity) compared to 3 hours and 28 minutes for females (3.8% who performed this activity).
domestic work activities 2012/2013 · Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 17.1% of their time in household chores during the day (preparing and serving food, cleaning, vacuuming, home care and home shopping purposes) compared to 2.4 % of males’s time spent in this activity.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 4 hours and 18 minutes on activities of domestic work (preparing and serving food, cleaning, vacuuming, home care and shopping for house) 95.3% who performed this activity compared to an hour and 20 minutes spent by males (43.6% who performed this activity ) In Palestine.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 30 minutes on shopping for Household (buying consumer and capital goods, surveying prices in storefronts, shopping on the Internet) 15.9% who performed this activity compared to 30 minutes spent by males (28.3% who performed this activity) in Palestine .
leisure activities 2012/2013[1] · Males spent approximately 6 hours during the day in leisure activities, representing 25.0 % of their daily time spent on these activities, Females spent nearly 5 hours and 40 minutes during the day, representing 23.6% of their time during the day.
· There is convergence in the average time spent by males and females aged 18 years and over during the day in activities involving media (reading, watching TV, listening to radio, using the computer or in the library) with an average of two hours and 45 minutes for males (82.7% who performed this activity) compared two hours and 38 minutes for females (84.2% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Person aged 18 years and over spent an average of one hours and 38 minutes on activities related to (practicing hobbies, games, entertainment and other activities, including actual participation in arts, music, theater, collecting postal stamps and coins, sporting games, etc.) with an average of two hours and 9 minutes for males 7.9% who performed this activity and 32 minutes for females (5.7% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Males aged 18 years and over spent an average of two hours and 38 minutes watching or listening to TV or video clips (77.3% who performed this activity) compared to two hours and 22 minutes for females (81.6% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Males aged 18 years and over spent an average of 2 hours and 8 minutes during the day (using computer technology, including use of computers and Internet technology, surfing the World Wide Web to read or access information, watching and listening to programs and music) 17.6% who performed this activity compared to one hour and 27 minutes spent by females (13.8% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Males aged 18 years and over spent an average of 3 hours and 11 minutes during the day on socializing and communications (talk or face-to-face interaction, talking and dialogue by phone, chatting on the Internet, exchange of official correspondence, receiving visitors and friends) 87.4% who performed this activity compared to 3 hours and 8 minutes spent by females (90.6% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Males aged 18 years and over spent an average of 52 minutes in readings (2.7% who performed this activity) compared to 47 minutes for females (4.7% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
Care activities (children and the elderly) and learning during 2012/2013 · Person at the age of 18 years and over spent an one hour and 58 minutes in care services (care for children and the elderly) with an average of 59 minutes spent by males (19.3% who performed this activity) compared to two hours and 20 minutes for females (51.1% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 2 hours and 19 minutes providing care for children compared to an average of 48 minutes spent by males in Palestine.
· There is convergence in the average time spent during the day by both males and females in learning activities (attending school or university, homework, training and teaching with regard to career development and professional advancement) of 6 hours and 32 minutes for males (7.0% who performed this activity ) against 5 hours and 54 minutes for females (8.2% who performed this activity) in Palestine. Personal Care during 2012/2013 · There is a convergence in the average amount of time spent by males and females aged 18 years and over during the day in activities of personal care (sleeping, eating and drinking, religious activities, personal interests and personal health care). The total amount of time was 11 hours and 31 minutes for males, accounting for 48.0 % of their time, compared to 11 hours and 29 minutes for females 47.8% in Palestine.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 59 minutes eating and drinking (98.5% who performed this activity) compared to an average one hour and one minutes for males (98.4% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of 8 hours and 3 minutes sleeping and related activities compared to an average of 7 hours and 56 minutes for males (100% for both sexes who performed this activity) in Palestine.
· Females aged 18 years and over spent an average of one hour and 38 minutes in religious activities (83.0% who performed this activity) compared to an average of one hour and 36 minutes for males (74.7% who performed this activity) in Palestine.
Israeli Occupation Measures during 2012/2013 Data indicated that persons in Palestine spent an average of 46 minutes, directly or indirectly, during the day due to Israeli occupation measures. (1.2%) Percentage of persons who performeded this activities (standing, parking, delays, waiting at fixed and mobile Israeli military checkpoints, beatings and abuse by Israeli military occupation and settlers). Males spent 50 minutes (1.7%) compared to 36 minutes for females (0.6%) at Israeli military measures. In the West Bank, males spent an average of 50 minutes due to Israeli occupation measures (2.7%) compared to 44 minutes for females (0.7%). no case were reported about females physical by the occupation in Gaza Strip due to the absence of direct contacts with occupation forces over there .
Comparison of Data in Time Use Survey 1999/2000
· The average period of time spent by individuals in the main daily activities during 2012/2013 was the same as in the time use survey of 1999/2000 .
· Increase can be noted in the average period of time spent for males 2012/2013 in labour activities in establishments; 7 hours and 45 minutes for males compared to decrease in the average period of time spent for females 5 hours and 13 minutes; compared with 1999/2000, 7 hours and 39 minutes for males compared to 6 hours and 17 minutes for females .
· There is a decrease in the average time spent by an person in community activities and helping other households during 2012/2013 (including helping other households, community services, irregular voluntary services) to one hour and 20 minutes for males and 39 minutes for females, compared with 1999/2000 to two hours and 13 minutes for males and one hour and 35 minutes for females [1] leisure activities include: Socializing and communication, Participating in community cultural/social events, Hobbies, games and other pastime activities, Sports participation, exercise and Mass media use
