The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) participates in the meetings of the United Nations Statistical Commission in New York
New York – 06/03/2019 – PCBS Delegation, headed by H.E. Ms. Ola Awad, President of PCBS, participates in the annual meetings of the United Nations Statistical Commission 50th Session, in New York during 01-08/03/2019, the delegation includes: Mr. Maher Sbeih and Ms. Amineh Khaseeb.
H.E. Ms. Awad stated that the Statistical Commission includes within its membership heads of statistical offices of all countries, as well as representatives of Arab, regional and international statistical organizations.
H.E. Ms. Awad pointed out that the Statistical Commission discusses in its annual meetings all issues related to the development of the official world statistical system, and provides guidance for improving performance and development, as well as the adoption of new international statistical methodologies, standards and classifications in data collection, compilation, dissemination and the exchange of statistical data internationally, in addition to discussing international capacity development efforts to collect statistical data.
H.E. Ms. Awad also stated that the 50th session of the Statistical Commission would discuss many important issues and topics related to the economic, demographic, social and area aspects; among of which the data and indicators related to the sustainable development 2030 agenda, national accounts, open data, big data for official statistics, quality assurance in the world statistical system, fundamental principles of official statistics, international migration statistics, price statistics, drugs and drug abuse statistics, crime statistics, business registers, international trade statistics.
H.E. Ms. Awad participated in several meetings and seminars as chair and/or speaker including: Data and Statistics for Evidence-based Voluntary National Reviews, Multidimensional Poverty: Measurement for Action, Handbook of Statistical Organization and the Regional Thematic Conferences, and Addressing New Developments in Business Statistics, in addition to holding several bilateral meetings with certain heads of national statistical offices: National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria, Head of Population Division/Department of Economic and Social Affairs – UN, as well as meeting with the relevant international and regional institutions to further strengthen cooperation and partnership between both parties in the statistical field towards developing the statistical system in the economic, demographic and social fields. In addition to the participation of PCBS delegation in many important meetings and seminars related to statistical work.
It is worth noting that the United Nations Statistics Division regularly organizes this meeting every year. This meeting is considered the international statistical platform at the level of statistical agencies in the world.
