October- December 2012 Round

 

Main Results

 

The labour force  participation rate of persons aged 15 years and above was 43.9%                                                                          

The number of persons participating in the labour force in Palestine was about 1.137 million in the 4th  quarter 2012: about 761 thousand in the West Bank and about 376 thousand in Gaza Strip.

 

The labour force participation rate in the West Bank was 46.1% and 40.0% in Gaza Strip, the gap in the participation rate between males and females still very big it reached 69.2% for males compared with 17.9% for females.

22.9% the unemployment rate among labour force participants

Using ILO standards, the number of unemployed was about 260 thousand in the 4th quarter 2012: about 139 thousand in the West Bank and about 121 thousand in Gaza Strip.

 

The unemployment rate in Gaza Strip was 32.2% compared with 18.3% in the West Bank, and the unemployment rate for males

in Palestine was 20.7% compared with 31.7% for females.

The highest unemployment rate in the 4th  quarter 2012 was 39.5% among youth aged 20-24 years. For years of schooling, the unemployment rate among females with 13 years of schooling or more was 42.7%.

 

The highest unemployment rates in the West Bank governorates were in Tulkarm and  Hebron with 24.3% for both. In Gaza Strip, the highest unemployment rate was 36.4% in North Gaza governorate.

 

According to the relaxed definition of unemployment in Palestine, the unemployment rate decreased from 27.8% in the 3rd quarter 2012 to 26.7% in the 4th quarter 2012.

 

Increased the number of employment in local market between the 3rd quarter 2012 and 4th quarter 2012

The number of employed in the local market increased from 756 thousand in the 3rd quarter 2012 to 790 thousand in the 4th quarter 2012. The number of employed persons in the West Bank increased by 34 thousand, while the number of employed persons in Gaza Strip decreased by 500 worker.

 

The services sector was the biggest employer in the local market with 32.6% in the West Bank and 54.3% in Gaza Strip.

The public sector employed 22.8% of those in employment: 40.1% in Gaza Strip and 15.7% in the West Bank.

 

The average daily wage for waged employees in the West Bank was 88.0 NIS compared with 63.1 NIS in Gaza Strip.

 

The average number of hours worked per week in West Bank remained at the same level between 3rd and  4th quarter 2012 by 43.1 hour per week. The average number of days worked per month decreased from 22.2 to 22.0 over the same period.  The average number of hours worked per week in Gaza Strip was 37.8 hours per week in the 3rd quarter 2012 compared with 35.9 in the 4th quarter 2012, while the average number of days worked per month decreased from 24.3 to 23.1 days over the same period.

 

 

Number of workers employed in Israel and Israeli settlements about 87 thousand in the 4th quarter 2012

The number of workers from the West Bank employed in Israel and Israeli settlements decreased from 88 thousand in the 3rd quarter 2012 to 87 thousand in the 4th quarter 2012. Of these, 37 thousand had a permit, 26 thousand worked without a permit and 24 thousand workers have an Israeli identity card or foreign passport.

 

The number of employees in Israeli settlements remained at the same level between 3rd and  4th quarter 2012 by 16 thousand workers from West Bank.

 

57.8% of workers employed in Israel and Israeli settlements work in the construction sector.

 

The average daily wage for persons employed in Israel and Israeli settlements decreased from 167.4  NIS in the 3rd  quarter 2012 to 163.4 NIS in the 4th  quarter 2012.

 

The average number of hours worked per week increased from 39.7 in the 3rd quarter 2012 to 41.1 in the 4th quarter 2012. The average number of days worked per month decrease from  20.5 in the 3rd quarter 2012 to 20.3 in the 4th  quarter 2012.

 

Employment status in the 4th quarter 2012                   

67.9% of employed workers are waged employees: 64.2% in the West Bank compared with 77.0% in Gaza Strip.

16.6% of employed persons are self- employed; 17.7% in the West Bank and 14.1% in Gaza Strip.

8.8% of employed persons are unpaid family members: 10.1% in the West Bank and 5.4% in Gaza Strip.

6.7% of employed persons are employers: 8.0% in the West Bank and 3.5% in Gaza Strip.

Working benefits for waged employees in the private sector

27.3% of waged employees are hired by contract, compared with 53.0% hired without a contract.

23.7% of waged employees contribute to a pension fund; 25.2% have annual paid vacation; 48.2% of wage employees women have paid maternity leave.

31.3% of employed persons in Palestine are affiliated to a workers vocational union: 32.5% of males and 25.8% of females.

4.2%  of children aged 10-17 years are employed

4.2% of children aged 10-17 years are employed: 5.8% in the West Bank and 1.8% in Gaza Strip.
