Press release by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees on the occasion of the 17th of April - Palestinian Prisoners Day.

Since its occupation of Palestine in 1967, Israeli authorities have systematically violated the most basic rights provided by international and human rights conventions through inhumane treatment, restrictions on movement, killings without trial, deportation and detention.

Since 1967 Israel has arrested more than 800 thousand Palestinians

Data from the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees showed that since 1967 Israel has arrested more than 800 thousand Palestinians: more than 78,000 were arrested since the Al-Aqsa Intifada. Since October 18, 2011 (the day of the Shalit prisoner of war exchange) 6,000 Palestinians have been detained. The data also show that 105 of current detainees were arrested prior to the Oslo Agreement and have been in Israeli jails since that time.

Around 4,900 Palestinians detained in Israeli jails

There are around 4,900 Palestinians in detention in 17 jails and detention centers. Of these, 14 detainees are female, 235 are children and 14 are members of the Palestinian legislative Council (Parliament). The data also indicated that more than 168 Palestinians held under administrative detention (without trial) remain in detention.

24 prisoners have cancer

Data indicated that about 1,200 prisoners suffer from serious illnesses of various types, including 170 prisoners who require urgent and essential surgical procedures, 85 prisoners suffering from a disability (physical, mental, psychological or sensory), 16 prisoners who reside permanently in prison hospitals and 24 prisoners with cancer. Maisara Abu Hamdia died on 2nd April 2013 from throat cancer. The lives of all prisoners are in danger.

204 deaths in Israeli jails and detention centers

Since 1967, 204 Palestinians have died in Israeli jails due to torture, denial of health treatment or deliberate killing, 81 of them since 2000.  There were 125 deaths among detainees during the period from 1967 to 2000, constituting about 60.3% of detainee deaths.
